in LA that he met Tommy Stinson (formerly of the Replacements) and formed the band Perfect. The band would put out two records for Restless Records. It was also in this time when Marc and his band members would record the multi- platinum “All about the Benjamins” (Rock Remix) with Puff Daddy. Dave Grohl was also featured on the track. In the waning days of Perfect Marc formed a new band with his friend and Goo Goo Doll drummer Mike Malinin, Clumsy. Although Mike’s commitments would not allow him to continue with Clumsy, Marc carried on.
After leaving Los Angeles for a brief stint in New York to work on the record with his longtime friend Aaron Comess of the Spin Doctors, Marc recorded the Clumsy record “Center of Attention Deficit Disorder” for Idol Records with producer Tim Patalan (Sponge).The record was a critical success, and although it turned out to be a one and done effort it was a very successful launch into the 21st century.
In 2004 Marc released his first solo record under the moniker Solly. The record was named one of the best DIY releases of 2004 by Performing Songwriter Magazine and received many licensing placements, including the hit show Lost.
Amongst his many musical endeavors Marc had also been teaching private music lessons since the year 2000. By 2005 Solomon, who had become a gifted music instructor, founded Zounds Sounds School of Music and Recording Studios, a music education and training center. Zounds Sounds currently has a student body of over 100, taught by some of Dallas’ finest musicians. It quickly became a hub of the Dallas music scene and has remained as such for the last 18 years.
In 2009 Marc spearheaded a non-profit benefiting music education called Way Into Music. Way Into Music is a public charity dedicated to providing quality music instruction and musical instruments to students eager to learn, regardless of their ability to pay. WIM has started music education programs in the Dallas area Boys & Girls clubs, a choir at the Lindsley Park Community School and has sponsored private lessons for over 100 students. Marc was recognized with an award from the Dallas Communities Foundation for Way Into Music’s efforts at the Boys & Girls club.
Of late, Zounds Sounds continues to grow with the expansion of their Lake Highlands studio. And whether doing a clinic at a local school, arranging, recording and producing an up-and-coming band, or gigging around with the Charming Gardeners. Marc Solomon remains a dedicated teacher and advocate for music education.
MARC SOLOMON
For over four decades Marc Solomon has been making music. Marc has is always writing, recording, teaching, and gigging. He has written and recorded with such artists as Tommy Stinson, Puff Daddy, Chris Lindsey, Aaron Comess, Mike Malinin and Eddie Munoz. His music has been featured on TV shows such as Lost and The Roast of Donald Trump. Marc been featured in many publications such as Rolling Stone, Guitar Player, Performing Songwriter, Phoenix New Times and the USA Today. The readers of his hometown Dallas Observer have nominated Marc for Musician of the Year. A man with many facets, he was also featured in the Dallas Business Journal and appeared in the Onion. And he is often asked to be a guest clinician, podcast guest and lecturer.
While attending the prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas during the early 80s he was already gigging in clubs and recording studios around town. Marc moved to Austin in 1989, where he formed The Clowns had a meteoric rise there and in 1992 he the band moved to Los Angeles.
During the 90s renaissance in L.A., Solomon befriended and worked with many of the people who would help create the foundation for his next two decades of work in the music industry. It was during this time
After graduating, Amy moved to Little Rock, Arkansas to teach voice at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Community School of the Arts, and to perform with the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. She also recorded her first commercial jingles, and put together an early professional demo. It was this demo that garnered her a national McDonald’s radio ad after she moved to Dallas in 2001.
In 2003 she helped form and became the lead singer of cult fave, Shanghai 5. They were awarded Best Jazz Band by the Dallas Observer Music Awards in 2007. Ms. Curnow was also nominated for Best Female Vocalist in both 2007 & 2008 by the Dallas Observer Music awards. During her years in Shanghai 5, Amy worked with such production luminaries as Matt Pence, Tim O’Heir, Todd & Toby Pipes & Earl Harvin.
In 2008 she & Zounds Sounds School of Music owner, Marc Solomon formed their band, Charming Gardeners. Charming Gardeners has toured the east coast, plays shows locally and regionally and has music on all streaming platforms. Ms.Curnow also performs regularly with The Elton Johns, a tribute to Sir Elton John.
Amy is one of Dallas' top call session musicians and has had the opportunity to do recording session work with Trey Johnson, Dave Castell, Danny Balis, PPT & Stuart Sikes to name a few. She is also an actor, in addition to being a voice over & jingle talent.
Amy began teaching voice and piano lessons at Zounds Sounds School of Music in 2006 and currently has an average of about 45 private students. In addition, she is the Voice Consultant to the Theatre Department at Dallas’ esteemed Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
Ms. Curnow enjoys teaching her students to find their own individual voices by bringing the awareness that their bodies are their instruments. Focusing on correct postural alignment (the Alexander Technique), proper breath support, ear training, and vocal techniques that strengthen not only the voice but the students' passion for music, Amy Curnow's teaching style sings for itself.
AMY CURNOW
Born in Lexington, Kentucky, Amy hails from an incredibly musical and artistic family. Her father James, an internationally noted composer of symphonic, wind & brass music, and her mother, an accomplished visual artist, encouraged Amy from an early age in her singing (family legend has it at 18 months!) and her piano playing. She began reading music & playing piano at age 5 and played the trumpet from grades 3-12. Amy was extremely active in various church & school choirs and bands. She was also very active in many musical theater productions, performing such roles as "Annie," "Cinderella," & "Little Red Riding Hood" in Into the Woods. She even sang lead in a girls barber shop quartet before graduating from the Paideia School in Atlanta, Georgia.
From here, Amy went to Asbury University and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Performance. During this time She also sang in a jazz/fusion band, working with legendary producers Charlie Peacock & Dave Barrack. She then went further to earn her Master of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Kentucky, studying with Dr. Noemi Lugo and Professor Cliff Jackson.
